e-Learning in Singapore and its Implications

This video shows what e-Learning is about. Thankfully, the video uses moving animations coz it is in Spanish, but no worries, a picture speaks a thousand words right? Haha...so I am sure it is understandable XD

In this Blog, I intend to briefly cover the growth and benefits of e-Learning in Singapore, the factors necessary to sustain e-Learning especially in Singapore which aims to establish herself as an e-Learning hub, as well as the impacts of e-Learning on the Singapore economy in the near future.

What is e-Learning?

E-learning uses electronic media as a form of delivery system which consist of a wide range of learning strategies and technologies; they include computer based learning, web-based learning, virtual classrooms, and other digital collaborations.

Benefits of e-Learning
I feel that there are a total of 5 benefits which comes with the introduction of e-Learning. They are;
  1. Cost-Effective through cheaper acquisition of human capital.
  2. Flexible-learning can be conducted anywhere and at anytime that you deem convenient for yourself.
  3. Uniform Delivery-since the same piece of information is being taught every single time to all users, this would help reduce the possibility of misinterpretation from ever occurring.
  4. Promotes Team learning & Collaboration-this is necessary if Singapore wants to increase its productivity through the development of social cohesion.
  5. Easier access-Everyone can improve their knowledge and attain any particular skill(s) as long as they have a computer with internet access or buy Educational Cd-roams which is easily "buy-able" at bookstores under the self-improvement section.

High Growth of e-Learning in Singapore
According to the Asian E-Learning Network (AEN), Singapore's e-Learning market has increased from "US$24.5 million in 2001 to over US$106 million in 2005".

To add on, this e-Learning market can be divided into 3 different groups-service, content, and technology. A reported 55%, 29%, and 16% of this market was occupied by content, technology, and service fields respectively. It is also expected of Singapore to have the largest e-learning corporate market in Asia, as well as a mass usage of e-learning in schools and colleges.

As we do know that education plays a crucial role in Singapore's future (because of the lack of human resource), the government has spent at least 2.2 of the Singapore's GDP on working with the private sectors so as to "encourage technology based learning system to enhance learners’ understating of abstract concept as well as to increase their interest in learning".

Factors that Allow e-Learning to grow in Singapore
  1. Adequate Infrastructure-Singapore has most of the advances telecommunication infrastructures as compared to other South East Asia Countries; some 79% or more of Singaporeans own their own computers and spends approximately 3.45% of its GDP on IT spending.
  2. Globalization-Since businesses are moving around the world due to trade and information technology, e-Learning would be an efficient tool to assist in skills development and knowledge acquisition.
  3. Demographic changes-Singapore has a large aging population due to the insufficient birth rates, therefore in-order to keep this aging workforce productive, it would be necessary for them to undergo training and re-training.
  4. Increase demand for knowledge-Singapore is a knowledge economy, therefore it requires higher level of education, computer literacy, analytically skilled human resources.
  5. Outsourcing-many companies prefer to concentrate their attentions on the main business and send human resource training and development overseas.
  6. Government Incentives

Impact of e-Learning on the Singaporean Economy
With e-Learning being introduced to the younger generation, this would help prepare them for work in the different sectors through their accumulated knowledge; to add on, the middle and older generation can still undergo upgrading and re-training respectively. This means that this pool of effective and highly skilled workers or potential workers would prove to be attractive to foreign investors, therefore injecting an increased number of Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) into the Singapore economy which would in-turn result to job creations, as well as technology transfer.

Lastly, here is a video on the case study of e-Learning in schools in Arizona. I know that I focused more on e-learning and its contributions to the Singapore economy and did not elaborate much on e-learning in schools (my bad...) so I would suggest that you watch this :D

E-Business (for Sellers to do, Bloggers to help & Buyers to know...Eyes Only)

Hey Hey Hey, this is currently my fourth COM125 Blog on issues pertaining to the internet. This week my COM125 instructor, Mr. Abel, was educating us on "Doing Business on the Internet". I know, I know...the idea of running a simple business on the internet may seem relatively easy, especially if you are a person who belongs to the "Computer Generation", and is well-equipped with the skills to do so. But well, here goes :)

You might just...
Sign up with sites like Blogspot, Livejournal, and so on to create a Blog page. (It's FREE!)

Customize your Blog (By that I mean in plain English to decorate your Blog with you favorite color, pictures, songs that you like as some sort of a playlist so that the people who visit your Blog could enjoy, etc...)

Post the items that you want to sell on your page. (Please remember to state your price for your product(s), list you terms and conditions, mode of payment(s) preferred (the mores the better coz it means more business locally and internationally), returns and shipping cost if necessary.)

However, sellers with such Blog-shops have to attain and maintain their credibility to ensure buyers that they are not only trustworthy but also legitimate so as to establish long-term businesses with their online clients. Since buyers would usually not make any purchases from sellers who tend to cause suspicion, credibility is vital and critical for their e-business. So what are things sellers can do...

For beginner sellers, they can get their credibility by keeping a fast and efficient two-way communication between themselves and their potential buyers; they can give prompt replies on product information, and prompt deliveries or postage to their customers who ordered from them. These sellers should also respect the anonymity of these buyers and not expose their financial information, and so on.

For sellers who have already established themselves well, they can give a short profile on themselves or link to prove their credibility such as indicating that he or she has an Ebay account with 99.9% of customers (old and new) giving good or excellent feedback.

Click this link to view an example of a Blog-shop(http://cheapest-toy-eva.blogspot.com/) Call me childish, but I happen to frequent this site coz I just love stuffed Kapibara-san. Now conveniently, what I am doing is helping this particular Blogshop do a free "advertisement" (heard they are currently having a 20-30% discount, so go visit if you want to) to let my readers and fellow bloggers know the existence of such a site, as well as promoting the specialty of this online shop; it sells plus-hies for collectors or toy lovers or for gifts. ;3

Lastly, this goes out to all online buyers out there, please remember to never ever disclose your bank or card information, because the number of fraud cases online is increasing. If the seller is a scam, he or she may use these information to hack into your bank account(s) and well you know what happens next, right? There goes your money, boohoo :.(

I would highly recommend paying through Paypal coz at the very least they do insure you and help "chase" your money back from sellers who are not responsive or who had sent out a defective, damaged, or did not send out your item(s) at all. You can do so by opening a case under the Resolution section on the Paypal page provided you have a credit/debit card and an account with them.

Here are videos of how you can set up a Paypal account and use it for payment on online purchases and receiving payment for sellers from international buyers. Do click on the videos...Enjoy XD

When Twitter Versus Facebook...

<3Yippy, my Third COM125 Blog is up...so happy...WHOOT! WHOOT!<3

In this week, I will explore the usefulness of Twitter, make a comparison between the latter and the current reigning in popularity social network site, the book, as well as draw a conclusion on whether such sites are good or bad for businesses (be it selling your stuff online, advertising spaces, etc)...

To be honest, I am not much of a techno savvy or social buzz person so please believe me if I say that I have NO Twitter account, but I recently joined Facebook in late Jan this year (2011) due to some TV Drama news which I wanted to follow up on...Facebook had it so I joined it, AHAHAHAHA.

This means I have more knowledge on the book than twits; therefore, I will make the comparison based on what I know after looking through the "HELP" page with regards to Twitter.

I have heard rumors that many just "Don't get" the micro-blogging Twitter, and I do agree to a certain extent. However, I feel that Twitter's main usefulness is something that the user invents for him/herself...if you manage to think of something useful for it to do, just do it.

But if you must know, I have outlined some 5 ways that Twitter is useful, though I know you guys are able to come up with even more ideas than myself...So here goes...

News-on-the-Spot:Whenever major events occur, the Twitterer would be twitting on the spot, therefore giving the most current minute-by-minute (or better) updates/news on the situation. Moreover, Twitter only allows short posts of 140 characters which will make news more informal and easier to read/comprehend...

Instant Feedback:If you happen to upload a new video, post some writings or podcasts, and ask for comments so that you can improve on it, you can expect a reply asap. This is so much faster than the response we get from our e-mails (the wait can be killing o.0).

Crowd-Sourcing:Whenever you have a question to ask or clarify or do stuff like a survey, you can get your Twitter followers to help you by providing their take-ons on that particular issue. Similar, they can provide links from the net which addresses the question at large.

Note:You must have a great/reasonable amount of followers for this to count. By having one or two followers would just be redundant.

Acts like a Public Address System:If you make your very own videos like "The Annoying Orange", "Fred", etc.,you can use Twitter to announce the fact that the streaming of new episodes will be officially released on what date and at what time (when it would begin).

Sales & Marketing:Lance Ulanoff, PCMag's editor, had successfully used Twitter to sell the publication's hot stories...so if he can manage it, I believe others are able to do likewise.

There are many social networking sites, but there would definitely be certain differences between them. Here are two videos which;
1)Compares Facebook & Twitter in terms of functions, and
2)Concludes which site is better...at the end of the day you decide which you would prefer. (Do click on the links below)

Lastly, I end this 3rd blog article by emphasising the fact that social networking sites are definitely good for promoting businesses in terms of advertising/creating awareness for say the latest product that is about to hit stores soon, easier to build up a good online reputation, to gain wider customer or business connections to add to your business, low marketing cost (near zero), etc.

Below is another video addressing the usage of social networking sites for business in the 21st century...ENJOY!!!

Social Networking, a Phenomenon?

Welcome to my Second Blog, let's start with a video on a brief story about social networks. Please pay attention to the first 1 minute and 2 second of the video :)

Social Networking can definitely be considered a phenomenon, rather a social phenomenon. You might question yourself "why is this so"? Well...the answer is really simple...Just a mere decade ago, the concept of online social networking was not given much attention; however, as of today, there are a total of 65 or more social networking sites with over 1 million users and out of all these sites, 5 sites have at least a whooping one hundred million registered users.

Basically, the bottom line is that societies all over the world have survived without the services provided by such social networks for a very long long time (centuries and centuries), so how on earth did these networks which was mainly formed in college dormitories to cater to a small population of students turn out to become a billion dollar industry?

A Little History
-After its development in 2002, Friendster became the first online social network to get the attention of a worldwide audience.
-As compared to face-to-face interaction in our daily lives, Friendster had helped to accelerate this process of meeting new friends and connecting with your old ones.
Friendster went live in 2003 and celebrated 2 years of dominance and success as a media outlet before losing out to MySpace in 2005 and Facebook years later.

Now in the 21st century, technological advancements have indeed impacted many aspects of our lives one way or another; its main focus is to be effective and efficient and most importantly, being easy to use.

Although humans are equipped with the natural basic skill to interact with other human beings, Social Networking, the Interaction 2.0, has impacted us to create, acquire, and maintain relationships effectively, efficiently, and with ease.

Since social networking is linked to this fundamental necessity, it proves its status as a phenomenon.

To add on, Social Network sites have provided us with numerous applications that we fully utilized. Lets take the two top social networking sites to illustrate this-Facebook & MySpace. While Facebook provided games, other aps, and other motivating factors to encourage people to join them, MySpace provided a huge music network which allowed bands to gain worldwide recognition and fans. Facebook even allows a user to customize and change and update his or her profile, as well as upload his or her latest pictures or videos.

However, such applications are not the only reasons for people constantly signing up and registering account(s) with Facebook or any other social network sites.

The most important reason is that social interaction is a human need and it is inevitable. Humans desire and wish to attain the latest information, gossips, etc., as fast as possible have been made possible with the incorporation of the Social Networking Sites.
